Certain Songs #812: John Stewart – “Gold”

Album: Bombs Away Dream Babies
Year: 1979

No, not that Jon Stewart.

This John Stewart was a music industry vet who had been a member of the Kingston Trio after their popularity had waned and also wrote “Daydream Believer” for the Monkees before starting his solo career in the late 1960s.

Said solo career went nowhere until 1979, when he hooked up with Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks for the album Bombs Away Dream Babies, and somehow managed to land a top 5 hit with a slyly, slightly meta song about making hit songs with members of Fleetwood Mac, “Gold.”
