7 Things You Can Do While Reddit Is Offline

Reddit’s Dead. That’s What I Said.
The social news site Reddit has been offline all morning. As a result geeks around the world are itching for a quick fix of links to an odd array of stories that seemingly have little in common.
It’s been suggested that Reddit’s outage might actually improve worker productivity in the tech industry. Personally, I think that sounds like crazy talk. I’m not about to let a Reddit outage suddenly make me more productive.
Here are a few things you can do while Reddit’s offline. Remember, any of these things beats actually going back to work:
- Blog about it. Like I just did.
- Post your story to Digg.
- Update Reddit’s wikipedia entry noting the outage.
- Check Digg, Netscape, and Slashdot for an update on the outage.
- Check Reddit’s whois record to see if you can diagnose the problem.
- Create an ad hoc support group. IM all of your friends to make sure that they’ve heard that Reddit’s down.
- Search Google news to see if the mainstream media has picked up the story. If it has you might need to reconsider your use of Reddit.
There are probably a few more things, but I gotta get started right now before Reddit comes back online.
UPDATE: If this post is to be believed, Reddit is the victim of a botched domain transfer. They’re blaming the alien. Why do humans always blame the aliens??

I’ve already done all those things — now what?! Please.. Don’t make me work!
Here’s No. 8:
Install Scuttle on your webserver and start your own bookmarking service. Scuttle doesn’t have voting, so you might want to also look at Pligg, which is more Digg-like.
What do you mean all morning? It’s 9 o’clock in the evening this side of the pond, and Reddit’s been out ALL DAY. We live in a global world people, with many time zones.
On a positive note though, I found this weird site called Digg today (I’d heard rumours before, but never found the courage to check it out ). Believe it or not, it’s similar to Reddit, though it loads a mite slow. Who would have thunk?
Sorry Bill, I tend to write from my own perspective. I know, that’s not very global of me. If the update is correct then Reddit will probably be out until at least tomorrow.
Looks like I’ll have to give that Digg thing a try.
I actually got some work done. I wish it would go down more often. So does the guy I work for
Argh: Hard work never killed anyone (but why take the risk?)
Bill: Chill. We live in a world with different time zones but this is written from the perspective of the author.
Kirk: We all write from our different perspectives. That’s how personal blogging is.
Mike: Yeah, Nicholi was surprised that I actually got some work done too.
Eek! It’s happened again! Must… read… list…
Unfortunately, Digg is a lie. It is not social networking. It is shaped by the administrators. They banned my account a few times for no reason, no explanation. I was not profane. I simply expressed my opinion. I have very strong feelings about the lack of integrity at Digg and that the site is a fraud that is shaped to a certain demographic of young enthusiasts who are easy to manipulate.
