Meat Is The New Bread Edition

Todays links of interest:

  • The case for killing the FCC and selling off spectrum
It will never happen, of course, but if we’re gonna fr*ck the FCC, let’s totally fr*ck them, right? At this point, they’re just an example of Big Government in action. What’s the worst that could happen? A few companies owning the lion’s share of the airwaves? Oh wait . . .
  • Eraserhead: David Lynch Made a Man Out of Me
One of those films where you always remember *exactly* where you were when you first saw it.
  • Aaron Sorkin Throws Down on The L.A. Times and Blogosphere
Apparently, he’s pissed off that the Times has had the temerity to run negative stories on "Studio 60." And he’s been attacking the internets since Josh discovered his fan site back in the early days of the (still amazing) "West Wing." "An enormous rise in amateurism," Sorkin said of the blogosphere. "And everyone’s voice oughtn’t be equal." He’s right, of course: these days, Sorkin’s voice isn’t nearly the equal of, say, David Milch, Rob Thomas, Ronald Moore or David Chase.
  • Parents Television Council Screenshot of "Fuck Da Eagles" Girl
Just in case you missed it — which the Parents Television Council obviously did, like most people — they’ve posted a screenshot of the "Fuck Da Eagles" girl on their website. So you can get all het up about it. Honestly, how do their visitors know that it isn’t a fake? It’s linked to their official FCC complaint form. It isnt just ironic that the PTC is using the uncensored medium of the Web to show something that they want to censor Television for, it’s deeply cynical and deeply evil.
  • One Year After Colbert Flap: Are WH Correspondents Playing It Safe?
With Rich Little? Whose Nixon impersonation wasn’t even edgy back in 1974? Oh, hell yes. Truthiness hurts. Quote of the year (so far): "You want someone who appeals to the Bob Novaks and the bloggers of the world."
  • We’re fine with giving spoiler alerts. Just don’t push it, OK?
Tim Goodman wrestles with the ethics of spoilers in the TiVo age. Let’s just say that, as folks who TiVo current shows and watch older ones for the first time, we like his approach — and are glad that he erred on the side of caution on that "The Wire" spoiler he didn’t reveal at the end.
  • Dell develops ‘rugged’ notebook
You can kick it, drop it from great heights, even try to introduce a Pepsi Syndrome, and it will keep on working. Up until the moment it spontaneously combusts.
  • Digital music sales doubled in 2006
So skyrocketing digital music sales are failing to compensate for the decline in CD sales. Have the music companies asked themselves why? That was a rhetorical question. We all know the answer.
  • Netflix to be delivered on the Internet
Should be cool news, but isn’t. Too many restrictions, limited access, and a very limited library. Seems like Netflix could have cut better deals with the studios.
  • Dinosaur Jr. Nike Dunks SB
It’s true. Nike is set to release official Dinosaur Jr. shoes. They go to 11 (at least). Kassia is getting ready to go Air Mascis.
  • The Changing Face Of The Business
It’s not often we find a writer who can outrant Kirk, but when we do…a rant about the Long Tail and the fallacy that the Top 40 is mainstream. And, what has always been true remains true: if you give the people what they want (not what the powers-that-be think they want), you have an unexpected hit on your hands
  • Cool Tool: The DV Rebel’s Guide
Interesting review of a book about, well, how indie filmmakers can game the system for fun and profit. It’s hard to say what’s more fascinating — the creative ways that filmmakers (large and small) have for working around the nasty permit process or the potential changes this could have on the industry.

You gotta love the ludicrous hypocrisy of the PTC. Also on their Web site is a ton of sample dialogue from shows they have on “watch.” It’s hysterical seeing the way they almost fetishize “Sex and the City.” Methinks they have a lot of bored housewives relishing the job of transcribing the dialogue:
