Why Zune & iPod Should Have the Radio On (Radio On!)

Last week, I wrote a post about ways that Zune could actually be an iPod killer, if Microsoft did things like
not have DRM’d music, integrated wireless, and supported AM/FM and satellite radio.

However, according to Zune Luv?, this last suggestion means that I have lost the plot . . .

People with Portable Media Players don’t listen to radio – They like to be in control / not hand that over to anyone else. This focus on satellite radio or am/fm integration is the wrong focus.

Get over it.

Give us control of our content.

With all due respect, I need to refute two of their points. First of all, if you want to go back to the Walkman, I’ve owned Portable Media Players for nearly two decades now. Currently, I own two iPods and an iRiver, and the specific reason that I own the iRiver is because it has an FM radio. Why? Because when I do my morning run, I like to listen to the radio as well as music. Have done so for years, going back to my first Walkman

Secondly, how does less choice equal more control? How can having less things on my Portable Media Player give me more control? Isn’t it the other way around? If I have more choice on my Zune or iPod or iRiver, doesn’t that mean that I have more control over my experience at any given time?

That’s why I want the radio: because I use it all of the time and it gives me more control of my experience.

It seems like Zune Luv? might actually be most comfortable with a Prism DuroSport 6000.

I saw that comment and was a bit confused — how does this guy (presumably a guy) know that people don’t want radio on their portable media players? I love my “content” as much as the next person, but radio provides content that my iPod doesn’t. I mean, it’s always fun to listen to podcasts of yesterday’s news, but if I’m trying to discover what’s happening today…

[...] Why Zune & iPod Should Have the Radio On (Radio On!) – Hell, even the Prism DuroSport’s got the AM, so why aren’t Microsoft and Apple down with giving us as many listening choices as possible? [...]

Dude, i agree totally with having radio. im fed up with not having a radio on ipods. and if apple does get a radio, they shouldnt just come out with a new ipod. they should provide something like a download for the people who just got new ipods for christmas and dont want to spend another few hundred dollars after a few weeks.

I agree 100% with having a radio on ipods. I am now stuck making a choice between buying a Zune or an ipod. The reason why I would love to buy an ipod is because it looks better than the zune. The zune has a radio and I love listening to the radio so I will just have to buy the zune too bad apple loses out on my money!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lollollolollollollol

I don’t buy ipod because the gym I go to has tv’s that we can tune into for the audio on fm radio.
