Today’s links of interest:

  • MySpace is Dying
Remember kids, er, musicians, never put all of your eggs in one basket. If MySpace vanishes, your "friends" disappear with it. MySpace is no replacement for your own domain name and website.
  • Cartoonist with fake gun arrested at Miami newspaper
His note read, "I have a gub".
  • Congress unlocks US cellphones
One step closer to the free world.

That’s What I Like: Fridays Off

November 24, 2006 by Kassia Krozser

We are taking a rare Friday off so that each member of the ‘loper team can do what he or she does best. In no particular order, this may or may not involve sleeping, eating, reading, catching Casino Royale, indulging in a The Wire marathon, shopping, complaining about shopping, hanging with the in-laws, catching up with the TiVo, or designing the perfect media room. Other activities may involve drinking and visiting youthful haunts. Also football.

  • William S. Burroughs – Thanksgiving Prayer
You’ll want to gather the family around The YouTube before dinner to watch this one. Amen.

  • Pütz DuroSport Will Not Have Exclusive Scarlett Johansson Content
Heh. One more thing to be thankful for: we never have to use a DuroSport Electronics product ever again.
  • Richards Tries to Explain His Rant at Comedy Club
    Un! Comfortable!
  • NFL Network debuts with Denver-K.C., but how many can watch?
We’ve been trying to follow this and figure out who is right and who is wrong in this dispute, but the only thing we can discern for sure is that a lot of football fans are going to be disappointed in the coming weeks.
  • Peter Jackson dropped from "Hobbit" film: letter
Well, so much for it ever amounting to anything but a glorified children’s story.

Reasons To Be Thankful 2006

November 22, 2006 by Jim Connelly

Obviously, I’m thankful for family, friends, health, employment. But forget all of that, because here is my list of the Medialoper-y things for which I’m thankful right now:

He Wasn’t All That Funny on “Fridays,” Either Edition

Today’s links of interest:

  • Hundreds of American Newspapers Surrender to Google and Yahoo
Maybe they’re trying the ‘Mouse That Roared’ strategy.
  • Fox News Preps News Satire Show
Wait a minute. You mean Fox News isn’t already satire?
  • The Clash: The Singles: Pitchfork Record Review
The Clash never released a single that wasn’t worth owning. But probably not in this package, which appeals mostly to those of us who bought (and may still own) most of them as vinyl imports. PSA: nothing will ever top "Complete Control."

Target Blinked

November 21, 2006 by Kassia Krozser

It wasn’t really a game of chicken because, well, in chicken, both parties have an equal chance. It wasn’t really a showdown because, well, in a showdown, it’s about being quickest to draw. It wasn’t even really a standoff because, well, Disney had very little to lose.

So when a retailing giant goes up against a major motion picture distributor and demands different prices or they’re going to cut back on efforts to sell the distributor’s products…and then said giant realizes that it’s on the cusp of the year’s biggest sales season and on the cusp of the release of what will surely be the year’s biggest DVD seller…what is it called? Tucking your tail between your legs and begging for forgiveness?

Universal Music’s New Biz Model: Lawsuits and Extortion!

November 20, 2006 by Jim Connelly

Unversal Music, the mega-major record label that thinks so little of its fans that their CEO, Doug Morris, recently said that iPods were: “just repositories for stolen music,” has evidentally hit upon a new business model: lawsuits and extortion.

Apparently making money by putting good music out there with a price point that might entice people just isn’t good enough. Because, of course, we are all thieves. So instead of that, they’ve decided to go a different route. Instead of using their artists to make money, they’ve decided to fall back upon the lawyers. Hopefully, the lawyers will get a better royalty rate.

Let’s review, shall we?

The Weekly ‘Loper – November 19, 2006

November 19, 2006 by Rox

While you were busy waiting in line and kicking serious ass to get your PS3, here is what we were doing:

  • Zune’s Funny Money: Microsoft Points Explained (For the Non-Gamer) – I’ve read this over and over again and it still doesn’t make any sense. I might as well just be using Monopoly money. Though in a way, I guess, Microsoft Points is Monopoly money.
  • I Was Lost And Now I Still Am – Much to our dismay, ABC gave us what we asked for. No repeats. Did they do it wrong or are we just being whiny?
  • The Secret Cost Of DVDs – On the other hand, if you Google “WKRP in Cincinnati,” you can find some dodgy-looking sponsored links for DVDs that probably have all of the original music.
  • Fear and Loathing in Zuneland: The Social Has Been Cancelled – All the talk about the Social leaves Kirk dizzy which doesn’t bode well for the rest of us.
  • That’s What I Like: Television Without Pity – Jim shamelessly exploits the column in hopes of a miraculous job offer. But if you haven’t checked out TWoP, there’s plenty of shame to go around.
  • PS3 Crime Wave Sweeps America – Anarchy In The Streets! – You know it’s the beginning of the holiday season when people start acting stupid over the latest version of a gaming system.
