PS3 Crime Wave Sweeps America – Anarchy In The Streets!

November 18, 2006 by Kirk Biglione

PS3 RiotSay what you will about Microsoft’s Zune launch, it didn’t cause anywhere near the death, destruction, and sheer mayhem that yesterday’s PlayStation 3 launch caused. Reports of shootings, thefts, and generally stupid behavior are flooding in from across America. The details make a George Romero film seem tame by comparison. We have apparently become a nation of PlayStation Zombies.

That’s What I Like: Television Without Pity

November 17, 2006 by Jim Connelly

Tubey!Q. If you could have any job on the internet that you wanted, what would it be?
A. Writer for Television Without Pity.

I know that within the context of job interviews, that’s the wrong answer, and yet I keep giving it without even thinking. That’s because, pound for pound, word for word, snark for snark, Television Without Pity is quite possibly my very favorite website ever.

Fear and Loathing in Zuneland: The Social Has Been Cancelled

November 16, 2006 by Kirk Biglione

Bill Gates and the ZunesOn Tuesday Microsoft began welcoming the world to ‘The Social’. It’s Thursday morning and I still have no clue what ‘The Social’ is. I’ve scoured The Google for two full days to no avail. The Zune hype is making me dizzy.

If you’ve been following our Zune coverage here at Medialoper you probably know that we had pretty low expectations for the Zune. As unlikely as it may seem, I think the Zune launch may have actually turned out worse than we expected. Here’s a round-up of some of the Zune “highlights” from the past few days:

The Secret Cost Of DVDs

November 15, 2006 by Kassia Krozser

Most of the major studios have been engaging in massive corporate digitization projects for years now — while we like to make fun of them (and, boy, do we like to make fun of them), the truth of the matter is that the studios long ago realized that they needed to have all of their assets in digital format. Preferably a highly flexible format that allowed these same studios to further exploit their properties as new markets opened.

You see the fruits of their efforts as more and more classic programming finds its way to the magical world of DVD; we’re admittedly waiting for the studios to skip the step of physical media and just make this stuff available on demand, meaning online. But that’s another rant for another day. Today, we’re looking at old television series that are finding new lives.

I Was Lost And Now I Still Am

November 14, 2006 by Jim Connelly

Several months ago, while dissecting the TV network upfronts, I applauded ABC’s decision to air Lost with no repeats.

After all, I had been through an entire season where the pattern of three new episodes, two repeats, one new episode, four repeats, clip show, one new episode, etc. had been driving me crazy. I thought that anything would be better than what we had just gone through.

Hoo-boy, was I wrong! Looked good on paper; in real life, not so much.

Standing on line to buy a Zune Edition

Today’s links of interest:

  • To the NEA, News-Laden NPR is Making a Classical Mistake
As news dominates, so-called fringe music is left behind. The question becomes whether or not this is going to matter in our changing entertainment landscape.
  • Prime time to learn
It is sad commentary on our health care system when public health advocates push for increased accuracy in television shows…to help people self-diagnose themselves.
  • Got hits? Or maybe they’ve just got game
As Kirk has been saying for a year now, gaming YouTube and Digg is the new black. See, even in apparent democracies, there’s popular and then there’s popular as deemed by the electoral college (and you thought the election jokes had ended).
