What should be an easy answer becomes mired in a series of “What ifs?”

I’m a bit of a foodie. I subscribe to several food magazines and I love to cook. This also means that I watch the Food Network. Sunday mornings are generally when I watch. It’s usually on in the background while I read the paper, fold the laundry, surf the net or pay the bills.
It’s not something that requires my undivided attention, but I get tons of ideas and ocassionally even learn something, like a better way to chop a tomato or to grate a block of cheese. It’s usually nothing complicated, just something that makes my life a little easier next time I’m in the kitchen.

A couple of days ago, while discussing EMI music exec Alain Levy’s announcement that the CD as we knew it was dead, Kirk wrote this: “music lovers shrugged and loaded more songs onto their iPods.”
Perhaps. But that’s not necessarily the right reaction. Last time I checked, I’m a music lover, and I did neither (of course, part of the reason is that my Nano’s battery keeps acting up, but that’s another story). I actually think that the death of the CD is a potentially bad thing for music lovers. We’re the ones who could easily get the shaft from the wholesale transition to digital music.

So, I’m out for an evening of fun, and the conversation rapidly turns to digital media. A woman leans forward, her hand wrapped around her frou-frou drink and says, “Our studio is going with Blu-Ray. Do you think that’s a mistake?”
Yes, Virginia, I do. I think it’s short-sighted, in this day and age, for a major motion picture studio to lock itself into a single format. Sure, Hollywood has been spoiling for a format war since the bruising battles between Beta and VHS, but times have changed, and format exclusivity is a potential death knell for a studio’s DVD business — and let’s face it, with DVD sales going the way they are (that would be down), the motion picture industry doesn’t need more barriers between it and consumer dollars.
