    Sigh. We think that people can understand that an episode that was written and shot quite some time ago and just happens to be about a dead college student is totally and utterly different from and not meant to comment upon a real-life horrific tragedy.
  • Google Says Copyright Video Filter Almost Ready
    While this will no doubt indemnify YouTube from future copyright violations, it will also mean the end of YouTube as the go-to destination for viral videos like that "Studio 6A" parody from Conan O’Brian last week. And when all of the copyrighted material scatters to the "proper" websites, who is going to remember where to go for what?
  • Sanjaya gets booed at baseball game
    As well he should: his fastball had no movement and he was hanging his curve, leading to his giving up 6 runs on 8 hits in just two innings. FOX really needs to rethink these crossovers.

Why The Larry Sanders Best-of DVD Misses The Point

Let’s just get this out front: The Larry Sanders Show is on my shortlist of the greatest TV shows ever made. I’d already been a fan of Garry Shanding from his sly It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, but Larry Sanders was a quantum leap in every direction: the writing, the characters, the acting were all top-notch. People always point to The Sopranos or even Sex and the City as the shows that established HBO as an original programming powerhouse, but it was The Larry Sanders Show that really got the ball rolling.

That said, I have to ask this question: why are they fracking with us by not releasing every episode of every season on DVD? Why only the First Season, and now this (not just the) best-of DVD? Why not everything? I’ve been looking forward to buying every single episode of this show for years, and this is my choice? Bollocks!

Imus: Not So Much About The Free Speech

Over the past week, I have participated in several debates about Don Imus, and there were, naturally, two clear camps: those who believed his firing was the right reaction and those who believe that free speech was dealt a blow by MSNBC and CBS. Though I am a free speech zealot, I fall firmly into the former camp. The firing was proper and just.

First, nobody is denying Mr. Imus the right to say anything. He is not being muzzled — do you doubt that he’ll find another media outlet to host his program? In this day and age, Imus has more options than ever before to broadcast his show. His freedom to speak about what he wants, when he wants, how he wants remains untouched.

A Rediscovery Leads to a New Favorite

What I DeserveI love to rediscover things. Things that I once liked and upon revisiting, I realize how amazing they really are. It happens with books, movies, television and, most recently, music. I’m thinking of one album in particular, What I Deserve by Kelly Willis.

A couple of weeks ago, I heard the new George Strait single, “Wrapped,” for the first time. I liked it. Quite a bit, actually. And when I realized I was singing along and already knew all the words, it took me a second to figure out why. Because it’s not a George Strait song, but rather a great little song by Kelly Willis. Now, as much as I like George Strait, it made me want to listen to the original. Which I promptly did, annoying Jim in the process (which I thought was odd since he introduced me to her music in the first place). And the CD has been in constant rotation in my car ever since.
