Coming This Saturday: Harry Potter And The Liveblogging of The Delivery of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!”

July 18, 2007 by Jim Connelly

Amazon has promised — promised! — me that they will delivery my copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows this Saturday, July 21, 2007. But when? And can they come through?

Will it be early enough on Saturday that I’ll be able to finish it before the actual spoilers from people who have read the actual, physical book come spooling out of the ether? Or will it be right up against the 7:00pm deadline that Amazon has promised?

  • Ricky Gervais visits Kenya…sort of
Sure, it’s a bit old, but we just saw it today. And still fracking funny.
  • Albums From The A.V. Club’s Hall Of Fame – Hootenanny
The A.V. Club gives much love the The Replacements’ "Hootenanny," which announced to the world that, hardcore be dammed, they were going to do whatever the hell they wanted. The only reason that we don’t remember it as an all-time classic is that it got overshadowed by their next three records, which are as good as any rock ‘n’ roll albums ever recorded by anybody ever. I was going to write "but still, most bands would kill to come up with such a wonderful, beautiful mess," but most bands really wouldn’t. Which is the problem with most bands.

5 Ways To Improve eMusic

July 17, 2007 by Jim Connelly

It’s no secret that our favorite music download service at ‘Loper HQ isn’t iTunes, but eMusic. Kirk discussed his reasons last year, and mine are pretty much the same: the wide variety of music, the great pricing, and the fact that I can do whatever I want with the music I’ve downloaded. No damn dirty DRM.

I’m not going to address the breadth and depth of the music itself, but rather the user experience. And to do that, I should very quickly explain how I use eMusic. It’s pretty simple actually: I pay $14.99 per month for 65 downloads (it’s a legacy plan), and every week, I login, go through the new music for that week, and save the things in which I’m interested in my “Saved For Later” page.

That way I don’t use up my downloads at the beginning of the month, and have to wait because something as awesome as The Hold Steady Live At Lollapalooza comes out the day after I used them up. (Of course, I could get a booster pack if that happens, but that’s not maximizing my music dollar.)

After doing it this way for the past couple of years, I’ve noticed some ways that eMusic could improve its user experience. Five ways, as it turns out, and here they are:

Internet Radio Gets a Stay of Execution

July 16, 2007 by Kassia Krozser

Way back when I noted that NPR had gone to war against the recording industry, I commented that there is no greater enemy of the music industry than the music industry. You would think they hated music, the way they run their business. After all, what other justification could there be for bending over backwards to keep music from being heard by consumers?

In the months since I wrote that article, I have been reading many articles that quote representatives of SoundExchange, the collection arm of the RIAA, talking about how these new rates are “for the artists”. That is bull. These new rates are to create new revenue streams for the copyright holders — the labels. The artists are not going to see appreciably more money if higher rates go into effect. Artists never win. To do so would upset the balance of the universe.

  • Changing The Economics of Publishing: The SharedBook Model – Hmmm…I see a number of bestsellers in Lopy’s future.
  • Some Early Observations About The iPhone, Part 2 – In a hardhitting, two-part special report, Jim makes some things up about the iPhone. He now thinks he can write it off on his taxes.
  • The Perfect iPod: An iPhone Without the Phone – Does the iPhone point the way for the next generation of iPods? Kirk takes a look at the possibilities.
  • That’s What I Like: Peak Oil – Leave it to Tyson to find the bright side of the coming apocalypse.

That’s What I Like: Peak Oil

July 13, 2007 by Tyson

I am not normally associated with the tin-foil hat crowd but something has been cropping up with regularity in the news that has been keeping me up all night lately, which then makes me tardy with all sorts of assignments. I am talking about “Peak Oil,” the doomsday scenario that nearly everyone seems to agree we are rapidly approaching or may even be in the throes of already.

  • Universal cuts a 6th slice of video "Pie"
Remember how much fun and fresh the original "American Pie" movie seemed all those years ago? Nowadays, it seems like the franchise has been sitting on the widowsill for a long long time.
  • Warner streams entire catalog of music for free on imeem
And by "free" they mean "ad supported". Some people think ad supported music will be the future of the music business. In my day we used to call that "radio".
