This, of course, is not quite the beginning beginning. In the U.K., “Not Fade Away” was preceded by their covers of Chuck Berry’s “Come On” and Lennon-McCartney’s “I Wanna Be Your Man,” both of which are fine, but fine does not cut it with the Rolling Stones. At least not as far as I’m concerned.
So here’s the deal: I’m a Stones guy, period. I’ve never considered them my all-time favorite group, but they’re right there with R.E.M., The Replacements, The Who and The Clash, and they’re probably my most influential group, if that makes any sense. Or to be even more provocative: Stones > Beatles.
