MTV turned 30 this week, and Jim, Tim & Kirk discuss its influence and the time that Kirk said “I Want My MTV” for a cable tv contest. (03:45 – 15:25)

Then, it’s a Musical Moment to Die For with “Duel” by Swervedriver (15:30 – 17:33)

Medialoper Bebop Episode 2: Buried in a Sea of Coverage

May 4, 2011 by Jim Connelly

Michael ScottWelcome, once again, to the Medialoper Bebop podcast. This, right here, is Episode 2: Buried in a Sea of Coverage.

As always, your hosts are Jim Connelly, Tim Gaskill & Kirk Biglione, holding forth on a wide variety of topics.

There are 8 million podcasts on the naked internet, and we can guarantee you that no other podcast this week will focus on both Osama Bin Laden and Coco Crisp. Which is weird, because when we originally conceived the podcast over the weekend, we weren’t going to focus on either one.

But then, head-related things happened to each man, and we were compelled to discuss them.

Deadwood Fans, Here’s Your Conclusion: Screw You!

October 14, 2008 by Jim Connelly

I’m convinced the only reason that David Milch’s extraordinary deconstruction of the Western, Deadwood, isn’t regularly on the shortlist of Greatest Television Shows Of All-Time is that it never got a chance to end properly.

After three seasons, David Milch and/or HBO cut it short, promising those of us who loved its multi-dimensional characters, intertwining plotlines and poetically profane use of language that there would be a pair of two-hour movies to wrap things up.

Yeah, surrrrrrrrrrre.

There Is A Cure For the Summer Tube Blues

August 23, 2006 by Jim Connelly

Thanks to FOX, who like to start their shows early because they spend October ruining the Baseball Playoffs, the fall television season is starting this week. Which means, finally, rescue from the summer TV doldrums, right?

Wrong.

If you think that there hasn’t good stuff on the tube this summer, you haven’t been paying attention. Or you don’t have cable, which is where these half-dozen good-to-all-time-classic shows live.

Sopranos HD-DVD: Whack Job

August 10, 2006 by Jim Connelly

On one level it makes sense that the sixth season of The Sopranos has been announced as the first TV show to make it to HD-DVD. The writing, acting and production values are all motion picture quality, and this most recent season has been no exception. It’s only peers are Deadwood and Battlestar Galactica, and neither of them have been doing for nearly as long — and we already know that Deadwood won’t.

Given the combination of quality and longevity, it may just be the best TV Drama ever, so it’s kind of fitting that it’s the first one to make the hi-def jump.

However, there is one small problem: the price. $129.95. It makes one wonder if HBO has contracted out to Tony and the rest of his New Jersey gang to whack HD-DVD once and for all.

See You Next Year!

May 17, 2006 by Kassia Krozser

Probably one of the quaintest holdovers in television history is Season Finale Season. You know, that point in time when all series wind down and head off on summer vacation. See you in the Fall and all that.

Possibly, and I’m not one for apocryphal thinking (ha!), this could turn out to be the worst year ever for the major networks to take a summer vacation. Think about it — the general public is thinking, “Hmm, I’ve been hearing good things about that YouTube. Now might be the time to become addicted.”
