Medialoper Bebop Episode 5: Thin Wild Mercury

May 25, 2011 by Jim Connelly

Bob Dylan This week on Medialoper Bebop, Jim, Tim & Kirk discuss the three Bs: Baseball, Bandwidth & Bob Dylan.

For Baseball, it’s all about the Year of the Pitcher 2.0, and whether or not the shift towards pitching is as a result of the cleaning up of the game or a natural cycle.

For Bandwidth, it’s about whether or not the ISPs are justified in invoking companies like Netflix in their new caps. Hint: not so much.

For Bob Dylan, it’s about our lifelong love of all things Bob. Duh. Oh, and the song from Self-Portrait: “Days of 49.”

NBC: Getting Smarter

July 25, 2006 by Jim Connelly

When faced with the world of 21st Century Television, different networks do different things to bring audiences to their shows. In the past couple of weeks we’ve learned that FOX will continue to ruin the baseball playoffs; ABC wants to disable the fast-forward button on DVRs and CBS is going to advertise on food.

Lame lame lame. (Actually, I recognize that the FOX/MLB partnership is shrewd from the marketing standpoint; it’s just that I’m a lifelong baseball fan who recoils in horror at being faced with Tim McCarver, those dopey “Sounds of the Game” and sitcom stars in box seats every goddamn October until 2053 or whenever it is.)

So just when you’d figure that NBC would also come up with some kind of dumbass stunt or idea of their own, they actually go in the complete opposite direction and do something very very smart.

Satellite Radio: The Game Is In The Bottom Of The First

April 3, 2006 by Kassia Krozser

Two of the MediaBistro Fishbowls recently provided similar, but different, coverage of the satellite wars. In one corner, we have CBS eyeing (ha!) the purchase of XM*. In the other corner, we have the apparent trouncing of XM by Sirius.

Of course it’s too early to declare a winner, and given the fact that it’s a big planet, we don’t really need a winner (though at least one ‘loper has predicted a merging of the two satellite providers, at which point, you really will need a “Super-High Intensity Toggle Controller”).
