Certain Songs #1204: Morrissey – “Speedway”

May 6, 2018 by Jim Connelly

Album: Vauxhall & I
Year: 1994

The death of Mick Ronson — the ace guitarist who had contributed killer riffs to both David Bowie & Ian Hunter — threw Morrissey for a loop. Which, I know, is a weird concept. Like, how could Morrissey somehow be more depressed?

That said, Ronson had been a key figure on Morrissey’s best album, as well as a friend and musical idol, so there was no doubt that Ronson’s death informed the relative somberness of 1994’s Vauxhall & I.

Certain Songs #1203: Morrissey – “Tomorrow”

May 5, 2018 by Jim Connelly

Album: Your Arsenal
Year: 1992

Oh Morrissey, so much to answer for.

Look. I know that he’s an awful man on pretty much every level, and really, he always has been. But I also know that I loved The Smiths fully, wholly and without reservation. And while at first, I could pretend it was always because of the insane guitar parts that Johnny Marr came up with, by the time of The Queen is Dead, if you asked me whether the Morrissey ruled the Marr or the Marr ruled the Morrissey, I would only answer, “I dunno.”

Medialoper Bebop Episode 9: Kirk’s New Aloha Spirit

June 27, 2011 by Jim Connelly

This week, a mellower Kirk is just back from Hawaii — where he has learned how to believe — and he, Jim and Tim discuss the veracity of reports of celebrity death over social media.

In the middle of the discussion, Tim dies, so we tweet that. But it turns out this his death was just a bad Skype connection.

After that, Jim’s Musical Moment to Die For is “Ceremony” by New Order, which naturally leads into a discussion over the concept of Fair Use, and how that concept is useless if you don’t have the money to defend yourself in court. Which sucked for entrepreneur Andy Baio, who was sued for a pixel art version of the cover of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue album.

In a brand-new segment — entitled “You’re An Idiot!” — Jim and Tim take Kirk to school for his ongoing hatred of one of their favorite bands, The Smiths. As always, is comes down to one word: Morrissey.

And finally, Jim shares what’s in his mix: the latest from Fucked Up, TV on the Radio and Fleet Foxes. Also, Tim dies yet again!

Et Tu, Indie?

April 6, 2006 by Jim Connelly

Indie 103.1, broadcasting somewhere on the Southern California coastline, is a radio station that is an absolute blast of fresh airwaves. It is one of the few radio stations out there that seems to take it as a mission to surprise its listeners.

Which is exactly what happened this morning, when I heard something which has bugged me for the rest of the day.
